2018 Toyota Camry vs 2017 Honda Accord

For decades, the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord have competed directly with each other for midsize sedan supremacy. Critics and consumers alike have always appreciated each car’s well-rounded design and performance, and this has resulted in both of them being perennial best-sellers and recipients of numerous awards. While the 2017 model year marks the end of the Accord’s ninth generation of production, the 2018 model year marks the beginning of the Camry’s eighth one. Although either car is an excellent choice regardless of model year, the Camry comes out on top in this particular comparison.

Fuel Economy

The brand-new Camry model is more efficient than the one that it replaces. To maximize fuel economy, Toyota introduces the Dynamic Force engine codenamed A25A-FKS. Although a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine like the one it replaced (2AR-FE), it produces 29 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway. That’s 5 more mpg in city fuel economy and 8 more mpg in highway fuel economy than the previous model year. Although the 2017 Honda Accord has a smaller, 2.4-liter I4 in the K24W, it peaks at 27/36 mpg, which is 2 less mpg in city fuel economy and 5 less mpg in highway fuel economy than the 2018 Camry’s I4 engine.

Projected Reliability

Although both cars come from companies that have solid reputations in terms of reliability, the 2018 Toyota Camry is rated higher than the 2017 Honda Accord, according to data from J.D. Power & Associates. The renowned car research information company assigns a Power Circle rating on each new car based on reported issues on it during the first 90 days of ownership. The 2018 Camry gets 5 Power Circles: a rare perfect rating from J.D. Power. That rating puts the Camry in the “Among the best” category. The 2017 Accord is also very impressive, scoring 4 Power Circles and landing in the “Better than most” tier. Ultimately, though, the Camry is the midsize sedan to go with if you want to increase the likelihood of owning the car for a long period of time with minimal need for major repairs.

Ride Quality

The previous-model Camry was praised by critics, more so than the Honda Accord, for the comfortability of its ride. And with the 2018 edition, the ride quality is further enhanced by the brand-new double wishbone rear suspension. Joined by a MacPherson strut front suspension, as well as gas-filled shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar on each end, the rear suspension contributes to a cushioning effect that keeps turbulence from disturbing the cabin.
